Cary Alsobrook, of Spring, Tx., was unanimously selected by the NGA Board as this year’s recipient of the NGA’s Lifetime Achievement Award, based on his tireless (and oftentimes behind-the-scenes) efforts to build up and defend greyhound racing and the NGA throughout his long career in the game.
This will be only the second time the NGA’s Lifetime Achievement Award will have been presented. Herb “Dutch” Koerner was the recipient of the first award, presented at last spring’s meet. The award will be presented at the Greyhound Hall Of Fame on Thursday night, Apr. 26.
Cary has performed countless acts for the betterment of the game—whether through communication, breeding, training, raising on quality farms, importing, auction participation (he has purchased millions in stock from the NGA sales), consulting, promotion, producing top stud dogs for the industry, or by recruiting new people as greyhound owners and training them from start to finish. He aided in the training of quality racetrack personnel and helped develop top trainers, while always making sure his racing kennels were continually run in a manner that was a model for other operations in the industry. Moreover, Cary has donated generously to virtually every good cause that’s come along that in any manner might benefit the sport.
Health issues will almost certainly and regrettably prevent Cary from attending the Spring Meet to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award. But there’s no doubt that he’ll be there in spirit.
“This is a great honor that I am pleased to accept,” Cary wrote shortly after learning about receiving the honor. “(The award) is the icing on my cake to end a career which I am most grateful for.”
The gratitude goes both ways.
