Farm Development Program

Farm Development Program

Please realize that we do not broker greyhounds.  Our purpose is to produce a better greyhound within our farm program than our competition, so we can perform better on the racetrack.  This is entirely geared to those who wish to become a part of the Charter Kennel organization, and enjoy the great successes we have had over many years.  When a greyhound is purchased from us, then the farm program and racing future of the greyhound is already in place for you.  It is not our desire to raise greyhounds for our competitors.  We feel we can raise a better greyhound in this manner and obtain an edge on the race track, and have for many years.

The most important ingredient in all greyhound racing is the brood matron, so this is our greatest concern since she will provide all the offspring we offer to each greyhound owner who decides to join us.  No expense is spared by this organization in order to provide top quality brood matrons which can produce major track greyhounds.  For years, we have continued a high quality upgrade system, limiting the number of females and eliminating the weakest link at every opportunity.  It serves no purpose for us to sell anyone a greyhound we would not want to race as our kennel operations depend on the greyhounds we produce to be successful.

Approximately 90% of the total greyhounds we produce can race someplace, meaning major, medium and minor tracks; therefore, the opportunity to earn purse income is in your favor.  No one can guarantee how much, or at what level any greyhound can race as it is not possible to provide the amount of "speed" any greyhound might possess.  We can only provide the same excellent conditions from which to develop that "speed" as we have done for many years while working with experts in this process.

It is easy for anyone to own a greyhound, but it is what one does with that animal that turns it into an athlete should it have the ability to perform.  One doesn't simply purchase a greyhound from this organization without gaining the many years of astute knowledge in bloodline study, complete care and training provided, and racing in one of the top kennel operations in the industry today.  Each position is staffed with proven successful people, from the farm operations to the trainers that race our greyhounds.

There is far more to a feeding program than just meat and meal, and the overall care and training a greyhound receives is extremely important if one expects to race at the top tracks in the nation.  My suggestion is to expect little if you are not willing to provide your greyhound with the very best.  They will return to you what you provide them.  We refuse to shortcut the process, but keep your cost competitive with other productive farms.  I have always felt the benefits one receives in the program we offer, at no added expense to you, is worth as much as the total cost of the greyhound one buys from us.  If you will check our record on the race track over the years, then this could easily be confirmed.  We welcome that.

We do not sell greyhounds separate from our complete development program.  The complete package comes as the total purchase.  This requires a $185 monthly installment be paid for 16 months, beginning at the date of birth.  A lump sum payment is acceptable in advance for the complete program.

There is no other cost in this program, including total veterinary care.  Charter Kennel pays the transportation cost when your greyhound moves from the farm to the racing kennel to race for money.  As long as your greyhound races for Charter Kennel, we pay all the expenses.  You receive 50% of the gross earnings while racing for Charter Kennel at Wheeling.

Choosing your greyhounds:  Most of our pups are sold by the time they are three months of age, so we rarely have greyhounds of an older age.  This is a favorable way to purchase greyhounds since no one can tell how much speed any greyhound pup will have at such an early age.  You are never going to purchase a champion at an older age, unless you pay an arm and a leg for it. Our "Race for your greyhound" selection process is done with live racing. This is a fun and completely fair way to determine each owner in all purchases made. This is conducted over the internet after the 4th month of age since that allows us time to meet all administrative requirements of the National Greyhound Association. Each greyhound can be confirmed by their registered tattoo number, a fool proof system of ownership.  "Race for your greyhound" will be held over the Internet by Jay Childs with each owner participating.  Upon completion, then each owner will be immediately notified of the tattoo numbers, sex and color.  Each owner will be assisted in the official registration and naming of their greyhounds after the drawing has been conducted.
