"Points" are the value given to a particular grade and distance. They usually increase as you increase grade and distance.
Each individual track structures their own point system and the "point value" is determined at the end of the week by dividing the total number of "points" run during the week into the total purse to be paid out for the week. How the total purse dollar figure is attained is also different from track to track dependent on contracts, breeder's bills, slots, greyhound simulcast monies, horse simulcast monies, etc.
The breakdown per race is also decided by each individual track but is fairly consistent from track to track: 1st 50%... 2nd 25%... 3rd 15%...4th 10%
Each kennel then receives money based on how many total "points" they won for the week. Each owner would receive their percentage based on the agreement they have with the kennel racing their greyhound. For example, a Grade B (5/16ths) win at Southland pays 6 points. If the points for that particular week are $83.00, then the total purse for the greyhound would be 6 x $83.00 = $498.00. Then, based upon the lease contract with the kennel, the greyhound owner is paid a percentage "commission" from this purse. For example if it is 40%, then the owner would receive a purse check of $199.20.
